SPRING - THE HALLOWEEN HORRORS COLLECTION

 By Guest Reviewer Rebecca Barr

From film making partners Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead, SPRING (2015) is an ambitiously unique genre-defying romantic horror.

Following the death of his mother after a long battle with cancer, Evan (Lou Taylor Pucci) travels to Italy to process his grief. Seemingly for the first time enjoying the reckless freedom of youth, he experiences the beautiful country before being entranced by the attractive and enigmatic Louise (Nadia Hilker). Eager to spend more time with the mysterious woman, Evan secures a job helping on a local farm so as to stay in the country for longer.

The holiday romance blossoms, the idyllic locale the perfect setting for their growing affection. Something about the softly diffused lighting and tender visuals give the feature a dreamlike quality, with the graceful score perfectly complimenting the imagery. As Evan gets to know Louise, we begin to suspect she may not be all she seems - with something far darker lurking behind her carefully crafted facade.

What we initially suspect to be a troublesome past or perhaps a debilitating drug addiction is soon revealed to be something far more monstrous. Though Louise’s aversion to sunlight and ravenous appetite may suggest a carnivorous blood lust, the viewer is kept guessing. Utilising some impressive FX, Spring feels at times like a loving nod to the classic monster movies of Hollywood - yet manages to balance what should be hauntingly horrific with a subtle sense of beauty that feels more like a traditional fairy tale.

Spring is a slow burning feature that focuses heavily on character development, managing to evoke a heartfelt and emotional take on what could be a traditional horror story. A distinctive take on the monster movie, the attention to detail in the cinematography in combination with the soothing sound production results in something that feels distinctly more human.
